The Kendjam Experience: For wild fishing enthusiasts Episode 1

One of Untamed Angling's most isolated destinations, Kendjam, now has its own series where lovers of jungle fishing can learn more about this unique destination in the Brazilian Amazon.

To explain a little more about the origin of the series and what fishermen will discover following The Kedjam Experience, we spoke with Rodrigo Salles, CEO of Untamed Angling Brazil:

Why is Kenjdam so unique?

I think Kendjam is so unique because it has the essential elements most fly anglers crave. Imagine we are adventuring into a 10 million hectares, unspoiled and protected Amazonian forest inside the Menkragnoti and Kayapo indigenous land. Right in the middle of this area, we have the Iriri River, a crystal clear river that floats over a granite plateau and allows us to sight fish and wet wade for up to 10 different species that we can catch on fly. I think that what most of the anglers look for in going fly fishing is the possibility to wet wade and sight fish. That's the essence, I think, of what is the most exciting experience for any fly angler. And Kendjam provides that. When you add unique, unspoiled wildlife and experience the Kayapo culture, I think you have a truly unique and complete fly fishing destination in the jungle.

What can a fly angler only find in Kendjam?

It has to be crystal clear sight fishing and wet wading for several unique species, using techniques borrowed from trout, salmon, and saltwater fly fishing. We can fish upstream for three different species of pacu and matrixa using dry flies, or throw poppers and streamers for peacock bass in the fast water, while also having the opportunity to sight fish powerful bicuda and the prehistoric wolffish. Action packed fishing, wading in a gorgeous river with wildlife that is, in my opinion, the most amazing in any fly fishing destination in Brazil. Experiencing the culture of the Kayapo, the warriors of the Amazon, and learning about their knowledge of the jungle makes Kendjam a unique, world-class fly fishing destination.

What can an angler expect from The Kendjam Experience series?

Our inspiration to create the Kendjam experience came from our desire to show everyone a little bit more about where we fish. So many friends and anglers have asked me: “Wow, ten different species on fly, I just know about peacock bass, so what else do you have?” So we came up with the idea to show everything that Kendjam has to offer the traveling angler. So this series is a short video series where we show a little bit of each species, the whole experience, the lodging, the accommodations, the logistics, a little bit of the wildlife and the interaction with the Kayapos. This prepares any angler that is focused on jungle fly fishing to see why Kendjam is so special.
